The building housing the Bagration Hotel has a rich history and notable owners. This old St. Petersburg mansion on the banks of the Neva River was built for His Serene Highness Prince Ioann Grigorievich Gruzinsky, the head of the Bagration family (Bagrationi). Ioann Grigorievich was a direct male descendant of the last Georgian king, George XII, from the Bagrationi dynasty, which dates back to the 8th century.
The prince became famous as a collector of monuments of Georgian writing, works of artistic metalwork, and historical relics. Shortly before his death, His Serene Highness Prince Gruzinsky donated the family’s book collection to the Imperial Public Library.
The mansion was built in 1877-1878 by the architect Alexander Dolotov. The building was renovated from 2015 to 2018 and completely restructured into a hotel that meets modern standards. The hotel was symbolically named after the renowned royal Bagration family, among whom were the distinguished general Pyotr Ivanovich Bagration, as well as writers, religious, cultural, and military figures.
